Dear Friends,
Independence Day is a celebration of freedom. The foundation of freedom is choice. Choosing what to wear to the pool in the freedom of summer vacation? That’s what the Squeakerinos are all about!
Keeping to the topics of freedom and choice, last year’s Independence Day was pretty exciting on the campaign trail. This week’s flash story is a snapshot of that time, with a reminder to hang onto that hope and to each other.
Now what about “Answer Key”? Here’s a quick recap:
Amser Hughes was dosing rats with quantum slurry, one disappeared (oops) and when it reappeared, fellow researcher Hal realized it had traveled through time.
In doing his own sketchy research, Hal wanted to try that quantum slurry on himself. He sneaked into his office one morning and downed a slug of the stuff. Whipped five years into the future, he heads off to his apartment. That’s a good idea, right?

The flower boxes were overrun with weeds, cigarette butts and leaves. I cleared the debris, poured water on the remaining twigs and turned in to watch the convention.
A new candidate with ideas? The energy was incendiary.
By morning, we flowers were all in bloom from the heat of hope.

Answer Key: Episode 10
It was a beautiful spring morning. During the short walk to his studio apartment, he found himself looking for differences in the landscape and people but didn’t see any changes. The air was crisp, the sun shone on the daffodils, the commuter traffic was just beginning.
He was in the building and in front of his door before another obstacle presented itself. Exactly what was the protocol here? He jittered his legs, shifted his weight back and was about to knock when he heard the metal rattle of the chain, then the handle started to turn.
“Alright, then.” Future Hal took a step back. There was a look of surprise and a faint smile playing on his lips—is that really what he looked like from the outside? There was a sparkle in this Hal’s eyes. “Not sure what’s going on here, but come out of the hallway, it might be confusing for my neighbors.” He ushered Hal in. “Coffee?”
